Message: Recap: Pray ye the Lord of Harvest. The believer’s life of Prayer
Minister: Pastor Oreoluwa Idowu
Prayer of Supplication and Prayer in the Spirit:
Prayer of supplication, as the name implies, is asking God for the supply of something that is lacking. It is getting our needs to be met (1 Thessalonians 3:10). It can be a carnal or natural need, it can also be a spiritual need. The attitude for this kind of prayer is a sincere heart, not praying in your own righteousness (Daniel 9:18). The Prayer of supplication can be prayed at any level that we are at. This prayer can be prayed for yourself, family, nation or even others. This prayer is better prayed in understanding and backed by the understanding of the word of God (1 John 5:14).
Praying with our Spirit is praying from our recreated Human Spirit (1 Cor 14:14). This means praying with Christ because our Spirit is Christ (Eph 2:6). It is the most potent form of praying. You can find a burden in your heart and pray in the Spirit because you’re praying according to the will of God (Romans 8:26). It can be used to sort out things in the spirit as well. Praying for depth of understanding of God. All other types of prayer can be prayed with the Spirit.
Prayer of Intercession:
Prayer of intercession comes from a place of understanding. Whatever you’re praying for must come from a standpoint of understanding of the word and laws guiding the situation, and pleading before God (Luke 18:5). Intercession is standing in the gap for another person, situation or nation (Ezekiel 22:30). You call for God’s sovereignty to overrule the situation. It is reminding God of his will, written in his word, in order to judge a situation. This prayer is very effective in both the old and new testament. They are directed to God.
The prayer of intercession can be prayed by a saint in every level of growth, even though your level can determine your understanding of the fact word for that situation. Everybody can be an intercessor, but some people have the grace resting on them to stand in the gap for different nations and situations.
Intercession is done deliberately; it is not born out of coincidence. You bring forth your strong reasons before God while praying this kind of prayer (Isaiah 41:21). This prayer is not the kind of prayer you pray once; you stand in the gap until the change has occurred and there’s a breakthrough. It is good to know that the spirit of God is always making intercessions for us and he his willing to help us also to intercede (Romans 8:26).
Prayer of Casting your Cares, Prayer of Agreement, Congregational/Corporate Prayer:
The prayer of casting your cares shows that there’s a burden in your heart that you want to give the Lord as a reckless abandon (1st Peter 5:7). This prayer is based on trust in the Lord. The requirement of this kind of prayer is faith. We can cast our cares of not understanding God’s word, to the Lord.
Prayer of agreement is a very strong prayer. It entails two or more people coming together to stand concerning issues (Matt 18:19-20). This type of prayer is not the type that should happen with people that are not of the same mind. The both of you have to agree. It can be for supplication, for intercession, for anything. There must be enough faith in the heart. This prayer can be for situations where a change ought to occur in the life of a person and he or she cannot discern it yet. Prayer of agreement in this case can help to pull down clarity for this. This is a perfect use of brethren
Prayer of consecration, Prayer of Praise and Thanksgiving
Prayer of consecration is denying your will for the will of the Lord (Luke 22:42). You must be able to relinquish your will for the will of God. This prayer is made for those whose eyes need to be enlightened. It might not be enjoyable, but you just want to do God’s bidding.
The prayer of Praise quickens the heart of whoever is being prayed to, to look down at those praying. This is the pouring out of adoration, worshipping, using sweet, swelling words. From praises, you can actually pull down something from God.
The Prayer of Thanksgiving is not just a prayer to conclude our prayers, but it is a prayer that should be continuous, even in our hearts.
Question: What do you do when you have prayed over a matter (healing of a relative), and it hasn’t been resolved?
Answer: It is the culture of believers to believe in God; that is why we are believers. Even in the face of contradiction, you just know that God’s words are true, and this is enough to hold the heart together. That you have prayed and laboured in prayer and not received an answer doesn’t mean that God is not true. The heart must consistently believe that God is good and true to his word. “No” can sometimes be an answer, but it doesn’t take away the fact that God is good. The Lord can sometimes be quiet about a matter, but this might mean that God wants you to stay quiet with him and listen to His heart. Contradiction aims to stop us from believing; however, we must continue believing.
Question: How can we find the strength to pray when a burden of intercession comes, but the body is weak to pray?
Answer: The flesh is always weak, but when you start in the flesh, you will end in the spirit (Matthew 26:41). Any state you are in, start by praying. Sometimes, our praying posture can prevent us from yielding to the burdens of prayer, so we might need to stand up from the bed to pray.
Another thing that saps our strength for intercession is when we over-gist about a fault, or the reason why we should intercede in the first place. A consecration for an intercessor is to talk to the Lord first before you tell someone else about the matter, because talking about the matter will make us lose strength. Also, when we are weak in prayer, we should pray and ask the Lord for strength to pray.
A compassionate heart is key to being able to intercede. You must not lose focus of love. Anything you cannot love, you cannot pray for. Once the love code of the heart breaks, you cannot pray for such a person. If you don’t find the strength to pray, you can also burst into song; it lifts your spirit to find the strength to pray.
Question: How do we deal with offence towards God? After trusting God for something and you do not have answers, how do I handle my heart from offence for unanswered prayers?
Answer: We must understand that God is sovereign, and he sees what we don’t see, else we will be offended at God. God has all eyes; he sees the situation from all sides and knows that it will not be good for us according to his plan for us. Always stay in the place of thanksgiving all the time, even for what we did not receive. We cannot tell God how to help us; we can only pray for help.
What makes us get angry with God is primarily because of a presumption. We think God is out to serve our will. This was preached to us by a wrong gospel, and it sits somewhere in us that all the desires of our hearts will be granted. These desires have to be changed by the word to align with His will. One of the first things we realise as believers is that it is not all prayers that He hears, let alone answers. (1st John 5:14-15) Prayers that are not according to His will don’t even get to his ears at all.
We need to trust and understand the person to whom we are praying, that He is intrinsically love (He is love in and out). It is not your tears that make Him merciful; He is mercy Himself. Your scope of God being Mercy, Good and Love, is limited. The process of God reconciling what you are and what you understand to who He is, creates a disparity that only trust can fill. That is why some things come as reassurance to us in scripture, like in Romans. 8:28.
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee“
(Isaiah 43:2) the word used was “When”, meaning there is a certainty of a season where you pass through the waters and fire. The assurance here is that there is someone with you in the fire and the water. When we lose consciousness of the person of God, we think we are going through it alone. He is called an “Ever Present Help in times of Need” (Psalm 46:1), but do you have eyes to see him?
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world“ (John 16:33). We should rejoice in the midst of our troubles and trials because he is with us and working all things together for our good. There is a wisdom that God is working, that is beyond what is seen. God’s plan is hidden in a mystery, and when He is planning our lives, it looks like chaos sometimes. But we can trust even when we don’t understand. When we are thus minded, there’ll be no room for offence.
We can pray about our desires, but we should know that God is wiser than our desires, and that He will work what is best. Our rejoicing should not be based on what we call “positive feedback”. When the soul does not have what it desires, it can go faint because of the frame of the soul, but we should through our spirit instruct our souls to not be downcast and look up to God (Psalm 42:5). Subtle offense can be in the heart, if understanding does not come to remove it, Satan can capitalize on it to truncate your faith. This silent offence can derail many.
