Message: Understanding the Integrity of the Word

Minister: Pst. Laide Olaniyan

Even though the idea of scriptures seems acceptable to many, we have not come to full persuasion to be able to build our lives on the word and the word alone. (Psalm 119: 89) “For ever, O LORD, Thy word Is settled in heaven.” Scripture is a prophecy and, in real essence, the tale of persons or the revelation of a person, driven through the vehicle of human expression. A person was packaged into words and was sent to us.

‘Thy word is settled’ means established, firm, unmovable, irrefutable, and undeniable, and its validity is not subject to human experiences. The word of God itself predates existence. Scripture is self-validating and does not take its validation from elsewhere. Its authority and credibility are not drawn from history, although history learned its voice from scriptures, but its credibility is in and of itself.

(‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭2‬)—”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.”

The word of God is an eternal person having an everlasting impression. There is a confusion man has brought upon himself, one which involves man subjecting the creator to creation for validity. It is an aberration that the creation should validate or authenticate the creator. The word is a principal instrument and a necessary element in the creation and making of all things.

(Hebrews 11:1-3)—”Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

(Hebrews 1:1-3)—”God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

Not only is the word the source and creator of all things, but it is also the sustainer of all things. The word isn’t only instrumental in the creation of all things but also instrumental in sustaining all things. The word (logos) is a living and vivid expression of the will of God, and that is what holds the foundations of creation together. Once the word is broken, the foundation of the earth is out of course (Ps. 82:5). What holds everything in place is His word, His ordinances.

The truth is this: men have lived by faith before the compendium of scriptures. Men have been living because they have given heed to what God has to say. How did Joseph know it was a sin to sleep with Potiphar’s wife? The law of Moses didn’t come till more than 400 years afterwards, so there was. How did Abimelech know not to sleep with Abraham’s wife? How did the king of Egypt know it was vile to have taken Abraham’s wife? There were still the laws of God in the conscience of men, which made them know what broke a law even though there was no written code.

It shows that the law was written somewhere in their mind, having their conscience condemn them toward that which is wrong. (Rom. 2:14-15)—”For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.” – They didn’t have the law, but the work of the law was written in their hearts.

There are some societies that are more holy than Christian communities. You can find a believer who has more trouble and darkness in his soul than someone who, though not a believer, has just been shielded by their environment from the rot of civilization and decadence of the soul. Though this does not mean that such a person is saved because that nature is not sustained by something; a single encounter with darkness can corrupt it, so God does not trust it.

The word of God is archived in scriptures as a mystery. Scripture is the vehicle for the revelation of the word of God, the vehicle through which God brings His word and seeks to reveal it. The reason God appeared to the fathers and began to inspire them to write and compile the things that were inspired, and God oversaw the preservation, is because God wants to protect the integrity of what is ‘the word of God.’ In heaven, the word is undebatable (Ps. 119:89), but on earth, we gainsay and rationalize it; we debate the integrity of the word.

(Psalm 12:6) —” The words of the LORD are pure words: As silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” — God Himself has tried His word seven times before giving it to us. He ensured it was fail-proof. They are pure words; they are true words. In John 1:1-8, we see the word referred to as the true light. John was a burning and shining light, but was not the true light. The word is not only pure but also true. Some theologians have said Jesus in the incarnation didn’t shed all of divinity based on the premise of 1Tim. 3:16, which stated that God was manifest in the flesh. But when was God manifest in the flesh? Although it was prophesied that He would be called Emmanuel (God with us), and yes, God did dwell in mortal flesh, but did He dwell as God in mortal flesh? If He did, would He need to pray to His Father?

(‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭14‬)—”And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” — The Eternal Word was made flesh. Between His Eternal and Everlasting state, and Him being embodied, He was made.

(Heb. 2:6-16)—”But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? Or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; Thou crownedst him with glory and honour, And didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, “I will declare thy name unto my brethren.” In the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.”

We see in the scriptures above that there was a switch of nature. He took on another nature. One of the benefits of the idea that Jesus came as fully God was that God was the one who paid the price, but one thing it excluded is that if Jesus lived all His life as God, then that means you don’t have a chance unless you have been made God, and if you have been made God just by believing, you should be perfect like Jesus is.

In communication, there are two things: encoding and decoding. If the instrument used to decode encoded information is faulty, then what is heard will be faulty. Many times, it is an interpretation of our own understanding and the instrument of judgment that we have been raised with that we use to decode the speaker’s thought, not necessarily the speaker’s point of view.

The vehicle of scriptures is to testify of a person, the Eternal Word, creator and sustainer of all things. Jesus is the Eternal Word, and He is the one who is being revealed; in Him dwelleth the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Col 2:9). Scripture is revealing the persons of the Godhead accurately; all of them are hidden in the person of Jesus, and the scripture is revealing Jesus.

The word of God has been tried by God Himself as a quality assurance person. God has finished His word, and there is no need for further upgrades or adjustments. The word is complete from beginning to end. It is the solution to all of man. There is a need for understanding and knowing the scriptures because of the revelation of the word.

(Psalm 138:2) I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

(Isaiah 55:11) So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. — This means that His word cannot fail. The things He created can pass away but what created the things He created can never pass away. So if God says you will perish if you do a thing, best believe it will happen, and if He says you will have life if you carry out an obedience, it surely will happen. The word is not validated by times, it is what brings times and dispensations into place.

(Matthew 24:35)“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” — We can bank on God’s word. We can build our life, business, health and everything about us on the word of God because we know that He is the pillar that sustains all things; He is dependable. It will be foolish to know what created creation and then build our lives on creation.

(Matthew 7:24)Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock, and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” — His house here is his life. Satan is setting some lives for a great fall by making men build their lives on senses, on Google. We must learn to build ourselves on the word of God and obey it.

(Psalm 37:25) “I have been young, and now am old; Yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” — God has never failed, and He will never start with you. Even if we don’t believe, He remains faithful and can’t deny Himself (2Tim. 2:13). Our experiences or testimonies are not what make the word credible.

If the word doesn’t seem to work, it’s not God because He is always right; it is we who did not hear correctly.

The word of God is sure and infallible. Many have accused God and charged Him foolishly because we were right in our own eyes and God was ‘wrong.’ Job lost everything in one day and never charged God foolishly (Job 1:22).

The gift of God, called the Bible, is not just a storybook but the foundation of life. Many times when we read the word, we see it not as an authority but as a third-party opinion. We don’t see it as what to build our lives on or a secret to build our lives upon. It is good to build your life on the word; otherwise, you will be afraid of what the world is afraid of.

(Isaiah 54:11-17) — “O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake. Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”

From the scriptures above, we should come to understand that there is no evil arrow that can hit us. The LORD says He made even the instruments the evil one uses to conjure his seeming weapons. Yes, the evil one can gather, but as long as it’s not God that authored the enemy’s intent and gathering, it will surely fall (Isaiah 54:15).

(Isaiah 8:9) “Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces, Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.”Do you know how many tongues are against us daily? But God is with us. Many of us have taken our warfare carnal and fought with everyone. What gives the word credibility and validity is the person inside of us. We must build our life on the word. How do we build our life on the Word? This is done by a consistent reading habit.

(Jeremiah 15:16)Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. — If you don’t read, you won’t find the word. So we must make reading scriptures a habit. We must read the word; read scriptures to yourself, read large chunks of scriptures.

(1 Timothy 4:13) “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” — We will not know what is contained therein if we are not a reader. As we read, we listen to exhortation and teachings, that’s how we are given understanding.

There is power in meditation. Many of us read the word and straightaway forget because we don’t meditate on the word.

(Joshua 1:8) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. When we read, the word is in our mouth, but to keep it inside of us, we must meditate on it, train our tongues to retain it, and train our lips to hold on to it.

Meditation means to ponder in the heart, revolve the word in your heart, probe it, and ask questions. It stays in our mind, and we ponder on it until we can build our lives on it. We must see ourselves established in our hearts, minds, and words. It is the process of mediation or contemplation that we build. If we skip the meditation aspect, we will not be able to observe to do (Josh 1:8). We don’t just get power to do immediately; we read.

For many, the reason we don’t practice the word is that we lack time for meditation; we just read the word and go about our business. We lack the power to do when we don’t meditate on the word. One of the things that happens in the place of prayer is that the heart ponders on the word, then light breaks through. So when we pray in other tongues, we should think on scriptures, put scriptures in our minds, and make sure our minds don’t go haywire. As we are pondering on scriptures and praying in the Holy Ghost, light and understanding begin to shine, then the intensity of prayer increases. We must get to a place where our hearts shift on the word, our souls get founded on that word, and then that word becomes a natural driver of our lives. So if we don’t meditate, we can know the word somewhere, but we will lack the power to do it. Meditation is one way to edify ourselves. We must be disciplined enough to think spiritually on the word.

We are commanded to think on certain things (Phil. 4:8). Our thoughts should not just run haywire. There must be an exercise of the heart and mind in meditation on the word until our whole being is consumed by the word.

(1 Timothy 4:15) “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” — The word of God is not ineffectual, rather we are the ones not using it right. Many of us use the word without prescription and then end up not getting the result.

(Prov. 4:21-22) “My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh.” — That we have been preached to does not mean we have found the word. The Berean Christians were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind and searched the scriptures daily to see whether those things were so (Acts 17:11). They believed because they found it. When we are taught the word, do we go back to search out the scriptures until we find it ourselves? Until it’s found, that is when the word becomes ours.

The word is not just medicine because we read it, but because we found it. We should find the word, eat it, and regurgitate it again and again until our life is built on it, then it will bring forth an essence from our spirit.

You can’t take in the word while unforgiveness still lies within; that in itself becomes a blocker. We must strictly follow the owner’s prescription. The scripture is sure, true, and infallible, and it will outlive the present. It’s a privilege and mercy that we are being shown the way of the scriptures so that you and I can also outlive the present. We must continually give ourselves to it. If it seems like the word doesn’t work, increase the dose

The word works, and it can be built upon. What are you building on? Are you building on the truth of God’s word or the ideas and philosophies of men?
