Message: The Essence of Scriptures
Minister: Pastor Laide Olaniyan
One of the things associated with the people of the word of righteousness is proper understanding of the word.
(Matt. 13:52) – “Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” – We must be instructed.
The essence of the Bible study is for the proper grounding of the believer. (2 Tim. 3:15-17) — “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
We are looking at the essence of scriptures. It is important to know the essence of studying the Bible; why do we have to pay so much attention to scriptures? The learning of Timothy did not begin with Paul, it began with his mother (2 Tim. 1:5). The first encounter of Timothy to faith were the parents; he saw conversations, life and understanding of scriptures. He was instructed in the way of scriptures. The way of scriptures is not an option in our homes. God said concerning Abraham that He knows that Abraham will command his children and household after Him. (Gen 18:19). This was before the law was given; there was nothing referenced as the law until Moses came. Sometimes, you wonder how the men of old, followed God, because there was no compendium, book or law. However, scriptures existed. The Bible did not begin with Moses; it is written in heaven. Angel Gabriel came to Daniel to tell him about what was noted in the scripture of truth (Dan. 10:21). This means that Angels understand the Bible.
God, wanting to communicate His love and person to man, gave us the Bible. It is one of the best gifts God gave to us. We must know that we don’t know the Bible like we ought to; we don’t relate with it the way God wants us to.
(2 Peter 1:21) — “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” — All that is archived in the scriptures is prophecy; the Holy Ghost moved them to pen down prophecy. The Bible is a compendium of prophecy; it is a prophetic writ. It is not just an historical event or an archive of historical culture, it is not a genealogical compendium that archived the genealogy of a particular race. Christianity is not a white man’s religionn or a Jewish culture that is being imposed on black people. Scriptures are God’s mystery to archive the keys and mystery of life; it is the compass to find God. God in His mercy, presided over the inspiration, writing and preservation of the holy scriptures to preserve the way to Himself.
Satan has attacked and sought to extinguish the way of faith; the living way which is the way of life. (Habakkuk 2:4b) —“but the just shall live by his faith.” — The living way is a faith way. The way of the living soul is a faith way that was seeking God in the earth before the giving of scriptures. Sin ensured that man was cut short in going after God. In the garden, God came to Adam in the cool of the day and they fellowship (Gen. 3:8); He came to Adam and Eve everyday, to an end. God was raising their personality in the garden and they were learning of God, and fellowshipping with the Divine God. When man died, his spirit was separated from the life of God but his soul still had life. It was some years after Adam had died before it was written in Genesis 6 that man had become flesh and the way of God was corrupted in the earth (Gen 6:12).
In Genesis 5, we see the generations of Adam and how they lived, as against the generation of Cain who were not recorded to have lived (Gen. 4).
Corruption has risen from the generation of Cain but something survived in the seed of Noah; it was the seed of Ham which was Canaan that Noah cursed. God saved eight people and wanted to start again with Noah because he found favour with God.
In Genesis 11, we see how the generation of men who possessed life were getting weaker and weaker, but God in Abraham began to recover faith, because the lineage of faith was almost being extinguished out of the earth. When God called Abraham back, He began to recover faith life. God called and blessed him alone; he found mercy with God not because he is the first to respond to faith, but because he was able to archive something in the spirit that was patented after him (Rom. 4:16).
In Luke 1:32, it was written that Jesus will inherit the throne of His father, David. The throne was before David came, and had always been an allocation in God, but David came and obeyed a conversation that made them patent the throne after him. So also, faith had existed before Abraham but he was able to follow a conversation with God that made them to patent faith after him; he found a mercy to archive a conversation a conversation that revealed the whole journey of salvation in a type and shadow (Rom. 4:1-5). He found the path of faith to the promise; he laid hold on the promise through faith. He obeyed a faith through which it is recorded that he liveth (Ex. 3:15). Abraham did not begin his life, living like his progenitors but he ended up as a living soul (Matt 22:32); God recovered humanity in Abraham.
The attempt of Satan to weaken the nations and make them not able to live by faith and respond to God has been an agelong battle. He wants to makes sure that faith will not be recorded, generations after generations. This is why we must contend for the faith being handed down to us because it is possible to lose faith; and consequently losing salvation, redemption and the plan of God (Jude 1:3).
The only way to the promise of Eternal life is through faith and the only way to faith is through the word (2 Tim 3:15). Inside scriptures is the capacity to give us wisdom for salvation. That wisdom of salvation is the revelation or testimony of persons; it is more than just believing a person, it is to see plainly, accurately the persons of God and then obey it and conform to it (Jn 1:18).
The Bible has the potential power (ability) to make us wise unto salvation but we might not experience the saving power of the scriptures if we don’t engage in obedience.
(John 5:30-39) — “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” — The knowledge of scriptures is not equal to the knowledge of God. It is not in scriptures that Eternal life is: Eternal life is in persons. (Jn 17:3) — “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” — The reason for the search and accurate division of the scriptures is to see God plainly; to find the persons of God and then lay hold on Eternal life. If the word is not divided accurately, we will never find the persons of God, and if we don’t find the persons of God, we will never lay hold on Eternal life. Understanding scriptures alone is not the goal. If we are opening the Bible, we should open it to find a person; we should look for mercy to find persons of God.
If we think we know scriptures, the Pharisees know scriptures more (Matt. 22:29) — “Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” — Part of the reasons why we err is because we don’t know scriptures, and the spirit or secrets of scriptures have not been opened to us.
Knowledge and entrance of the scriptures is necessary but not sufficient (Ps. 119:11). It is an indispensable part to finding God but not the whole part. Jesus told our Daddy, Rev. Hagin that even though he had read the scriptures over and over, there are many things that he still didn’t know.
The revelation we have of God cannot come in a vision, the persons of God must be revealed from scriptures. Having visions of God does not profit anything to the turning of our person or removal of sins and iniquities from our person. God has to reveal himself by understanding, through scriptures, to purify us and for sins to be removed.
The wisdom for salvation we are to obtain through faith can only be revealed through scriptures. Scriptures as it is sealed; from the law to the prophets, even to the writing of the apostles is sealed.
(2 Cor 3:12-15) — “Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: and not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: but their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.” — The Old Testament is not just the law, it is the law and the prophets; the veil remains till this day. It is until a man enters Christ before the veil is taken away. So, a person can read but the same veil is in the mind; this means the only thing one will be able to see in scriptures outside Christ are things which are fading away. We will be limited within that which is perishing and not lasting.
The eyes of the apostles that wrote scriptures were opened; that was why they could see Jesus, His Father and His God, from the old testament, lay hold on them and write about the pathway to finding them. Jesus was a master of all the scriptures as a man, He read the word from a child (Luke 2:42). It was His daily conversation and He fed on it till He saw everything that was written concerning Him, and He entered into the times and fulfilment of it. Scriptures archive the pathway to finding the persons of God. Those pathways are not easily discovered, we need judgement to accurately divide it (Jhn 14:17). We must see the persons of the Godhead with the eyes of our understanding before we fully understand them. Scripture is mirror and water to mirror reflect God (Prov 27:19) —“As in water face answereth to face, So the heart of man to man.” — The clearer the water, the more accurately you can see accurately what is inside. In water, things don’t appear as they seem.
(Jn 5:39-40) — “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”
Theology is everything but finding God. Theology can argue scriptural accuracy but will never lead you to find God. We should not be caught up in the argument of words and then lose sight of the person of God. That we share a particular trait with God does not mean we are in all essence, equal with God (Jhn 5:18). If scripture seems to contradict itself, we are the one who doesn’t have judgment yet. But God wants to bring us to a place where we are perfect like Him.
That a statement is in scriptures does not mean it is true of all times — Who said it? In what context was it said? Was it affirmed as true? That the Jews said Jesus was making Himself equal with God in John 5:18, He didn’t correct them because He knew He could not correct everything about their judgement. There is a sense in which we are equal with God but that doesn’t mean we have the same image and likeness. Scriptures can’t contradict itself; you can’t prove a thing to be true on one side and it breaks another thing on the other side. If scriptures ever seem to contradict itself then it is you that has not come into judgment.
One of the concepts to understanding scriptures is to read it consistently and be acquainted with it. To also have breakthrough in the understanding of scriptures, we must have the Spirit that authored the scripture itself. There is that which is in the mind of the spirit. Scripture is Prophecy, and prophecy can have multiple layers of interpretation or fulfillment.
We must prosper in the reading and feeding on the word if we will prosper in the journey of salvation. We must also come to a place where wisdom is raised as a house on the inside of us (Col 1:19). Things according to His will are things according to His word. Things according to His word are not just because they are written there but you have to discern His word in what is written. We get this wisdom through God’s words but God’s word is not just the letters. We need the wisdom of doctrine to know and see the word of God and the will of God.
Desires can make us read scriptures but if we don’t have spiritual understanding, we might not be able to break into the knowledge of Him. If our hearts are panting after God, just the knowledge of scriptures will not satisfy us. We will long for Spirit, life and truth.
The Lord needs to fill us with desire and remove laziness from our souls. This laziness is a result of sin. What makes us dull is because the word demands change from us. Our apathy towards the word is because of dullness. But the word can change anyone. We just need to keep coming to hear. The Lord will put the love and quest for truth in us again to search for the truth of God in the word.
What we need to find is salvation. Every other thing in this present life is settled inside of it (our finances, marriage, health, career, etc). We can’t find salvation and miss out on any of those things. We need to find God which is seeking to resolve the matter Satan has sworn to keep man from. Satan doesn’t mind us getting all of creation except the creator. If all that we can gain from the scripture is everything but God, we are at loss. We must seek to find the person of God from the scriptures.
TONGUES AND INTERPRETATION
Breaking day,
We are breaking season over you,
We are bringing light over you,
There is a morning light, even dews over you,
Even the beginning light,
You need to dig well even to preserve this light,
What is given here is to shine around the vicinity,
Therefore, you need to pray,
There is a day that is breaking,
For many I will come forth to drink water,
These are the seasons you need to tarry,
There is a spirit sent forth even to perform this word,
You need many tarrying and staying on the spirit,
These are the beginning of the trace but it is booming light,
It is a fountain breaking,
Omi amugbe,
For this meeting is a light meeting,
For the glory of God will perform the word,
As the word increases, living will increase,
Without this water, many cannot live,
Many will come to take from this light to live,
I give wisdom to fetch and dispense,
Tarry until you break through.
